A meeting of major cotton traders in Liverpool next week will be dominated by gossip about one of the biggest shakeups of the global cotton futures trading business, reports the <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/ddff9afc-cbf1-11df-bd28-00144feab49a.html" target="_blank">Financial Times</a>. Cotton traders around the world are eyeing a potential merger between Louis Dreyfus Commodities - a venerable trading house with nearly 160 years of history - and Singapore's Olam international.
Wet weather and flooding may dampen sugar exports from India and Australia, the world's second- and third-largest exports of the sweetener, news services report. Cotton futures jumped on Monday, rising dramatically above the $1-per-pound level. Part of the rally stems from the flooding in Pakistan - a major producer of the fiber - which saw as much as four-fifths of its harvest destroyed by devastating floods in the provinces of Punjab and Sindh.
